EnerGuide for New Homes (EGNH)

If you plan on building your own home, and you want it to be recognized as energy efficient, then you will need to obtain an EnerGuide for New Homes rating. This shows a standard measure of your home’s energy performance. A home that receives an EnerGuide for New Homes rating of 80 or more is required in order to be considered energy efficient by Natural Resources Canada (NRCan).

How does the EnerGuide for New Homes program work?

  1. Submit your plans and specifications to Resource Efficient Housing Inc. (REHI) for plan evaluation and software analysis. A certified energy advisor will analyze the new house plans, noting components that will affect the energy efficiency of the house (i.e., mechanical equipment, windows, building envelope, insulation levels, etc.).
  2. The energy adviser will use NRCan’s computer software to model different options, looking for the most cost-effective ways to make your house energy efficient.
  3. A site verification visit is required at or near completion to verify that the house’s construction is consistent with the final plans and specifications. This includes an air tightness test.
  4. The software analysis is updated to reflect the details of the site visit. This electronic file is submitted to NRCan and an official label that shows the EnerGuide for New Homes rating of the home is sent to you.

Are there grants and incentives available?

Yes. Owners of recognized energy efficient new homes are eligible for a $1,000 rebate from the Saskatchewan government. Additional rebates are available for solar domestic hot water heating systems, Drain-Water Heat Recovery (DWHR) systems, natural gas appliances, and geothermal systems that meet certain criteria.
